BBA Tour Weather Planner

Climate-based planning screen for outdoor event routing

Best markets

🟢 80–100 Excellent 🟡 65–79 Good 🟠 50–64 Marginal 🔴 <50 Avoid
Scores are a planning screen, not a live forecast. They combine temperature fit, precipitation and wind considerations. Production version should use NOAA gridded climate normals and BBA's preferred event-day thresholds.

Methodology & Notes

The BBA Tour Weather Planner is designed to identify U.S. markets and times of year that are generally favorable for outdoor Big Bounce America events. Scores are based on historical climate patterns and are intended for tour-planning purposes, not event-day forecasting.

Weather Criteria

Temperature

  • Primary target: approximately 60°F–82°F
  • Ideal conditions are generally in the mid-60s through low-80s
  • Temperatures below 60°F reduce the score
  • Temperatures above approximately 82°F reduce the score, with increasingly significant penalties as temperatures approach or exceed the upper 80s and 90s
  • The goal is to identify temperatures that are comfortable for guests spending several hours outdoors

Rain / Precipitation

  • Historical monthly precipitation
  • Typical number of days with measurable precipitation
  • Seasonal patterns that increase the likelihood of rain-related event disruptions
  • Greater consideration is given to months with consistently dry conditions

Wind

  • Typical wind conditions
  • Seasonal wind patterns
  • Relative frequency of higher-wind conditions
  • Wind receives significant consideration because elevated winds can create operational challenges for large inflatable attractions even when temperatures are otherwise favorable

Seasonal / Regional Weather Risks
Regional and seasonal patterns that can affect outdoor events may also be considered, including:

  • Severe thunderstorms
  • Tornado activity
  • Tropical storms and hurricanes
  • Monsoon seasons
  • Santa Ana winds
  • Early- or late-season snow/ice
  • Other regionally significant weather patterns

Overall Weather Score

The overall score combines the above factors into a 0–100 planning score:

  • 80–100: Excellent — Strong outdoor-event weather window
  • 65–79: Good — Generally favorable conditions
  • 50–64: Marginal — Potentially workable, but weather risks should be considered
  • Below 50: Poor — Generally unfavorable for an outdoor event

The score is intended to help identify relative opportunities between markets and months, rather than predict the weather for a specific event date.

Important Considerations

Climate conditions can vary significantly within a metropolitan area and from year to year. Historical averages do not guarantee specific event-day conditions.

The planner should be used as one input alongside:

  • Venue availability
  • Local event calendars
  • Historical BBA ticket sales
  • Market population and demographics
  • Advertising/media costs
  • Competition
  • Tour routing and drive distance
  • Local permitting and operational considerations

Data & Future Enhancements

The current version is a prototype using representative market climate information. Future versions can incorporate more detailed NOAA climate-normal data and additional BBA-specific criteria.

Additional factors can be added to the scoring model if the BBA team determines that other conditions are important to tour planning.
